Polycarbonate Luggage

2022

Personal Project

Scope
  • Conceptualizing and designing high-end luggage.

  • Hand sketching preliminary designs, focusing on designing for functionality, manufacturing costs, and aesthetics.

  • Researching the travel industry for dimension and weight restrictions globally, to maximize volume and allowable airlines.

  • Using Solidworks to design the polycarbonate shell and render promotional images before production.

  • Working with overseas manufacturers to finalize design and source materials for the interior and exterior of the luggage.

  • Developing iterations of prototypes to solve errors and improve the final product.

  • Failure analysis using Ansys explicit impact FEA, thermal/structural creep multiphysics FEA, and hand calculations of ABS plastic latches.

  • Material science of PP, ABS, PC, nylon, aluminum, steel, and TPR hardware. Examining the effects of extreme cold temperatures on material properties.

  • Reverse-engineering parts to identify failure points, improve structural properties, and examine DFM and DFA.
